Benjamin Heymans - Double bass

Benjamin started playing the double bass at the age of nine. He soon followed a music education at the!Kunsthumaniora in Antwerp. In 2013 he was awarded the first prize at the Belfius Classics and at the MarniX factor he won first place for stringed instruments as well as the audience prize.

Benjamin obtained a bachelor's degree in Music at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he was taught by Lode Leire. He then moved to Germany and obtained a master's degree in Music from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater 'Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy' in Leipzig. He took lessons with Professor Frithjof-Martin Grabner and learned to play with the German bow.

The city's vibrant orchestra scene and rich musical past were deeply nourishing and inspiring for his musical practice.

He has already been selected for the Gustav Mahler Jugendochester as well as for deOrkestacademie, the Netherlands Youth Orchestra, the Orlando Festival, International Orchestra Institute Attergaa (Wiener Philharmoniker), Musica Mundi and the National Youth Orchestra (NJO). He followed masterclasses with Jeff Bradetich, Wies De Boevé, David Desimpelaere, Dorin Marc, Bozo Paradzick, François Rabbath, Domenic Seldis and Rick Stotijn, among others. His mentor now is Ioan Baranga.

He is currently part of Young Belgian Strings and regularly participates in productions of Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic and various chamber orchestras.

In addition, he studies the Educational Master's degree at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and teaches at the!Kunsthumanoria Antwerp.
